The Jerusalem B virus made an unwelcome appearance in California this
past week. The infected file, GUIDE511.zip (Home legal information
and legal forms) had had the OVL file altered, then renamed to appear
as if it were a help (.hlp) file. When the user engaged the program
after unzipping, it attached to her FDISK.COM file and began raising
hell on her hard drive. Thanks to McAfee's Scanv64 and Cleanp64, and
the enclosed instructions, disaster was averted. In the process I
called McAfee & Associates. They have discovered that someone has
used their numbering system and have apparently issued a "virus"
scanning program using McAfee's # system ie, "scan65" the next
in the number in (McAfee's) sequencing.
McAfee has NOT issued a 65 series and does not intend to do so. I was
told they will be issuing a new virus series on August 10, 1990 and
the new series will carry # 66, ie; SCANV66.zip, etc.
